British Legion update

Poppy Appeal

The Weldon branch Poppy Appeal realised £3,523 for the poppy appeal sales and in light of their acheivement were presented with the County Cup as the best achievers for a village of their size in Northamptonshire. Well done to all Weldon people who dipped their hands in their pockets for such a noble cause. The cup was shown at the March 31st British Legion Quiz Evening. Once again it was a sell out with a full capacity crowd enjoying an evenings quiz with Paul Garfoot presenting the questions.
A total of £722 was made on the evening and the British Legion would like to tank all those who attended.

The Pudding Club

The next British Legion event is The Pudding Club to be held in late May with the final date to be announced. Last years event was again a sell out and tickets will be up for sale in early May at £5 each.
Once again book early to guarantee your seat. Once again 40 dishes will be provided, with up to 100 dishes for sampling. Last year some dishes were emptied well
before closing time. All baked by British Legion people (or their spouses) so come and get your fill.

The British Legion will be inn attendance at Her Majesty the Queen's Jubilee in early June with the rest of the local groups. You will all be pleased to hear that our local Village memorial has been Smart Watered to deter thieves from removing the expensive inscriptions provided a few years ago by the Parish Council

The Royal British Legion Help

Formed in 1921 and is the Nation's premier ex service charity. Its objectives include promoting the welfare of ex-servicemen and women and their dependents and relieving hardship amongst them where it exists.

The RBL spends over £200,000 a day providing welfare and support.

This year the Legion has pledged £50million, its biggest ever single donation to the Army Recovery Centres, whilst working with the MOD and Help the Heroes. The RBL celebrates its 90th Anniversary this year - 2011.

Northamptonshire British Legion is responsible for the welfare needs of over 300,000 former service personnel and dependents. There are almost 3000 Legion members in the county with 40 local branches. You don't have to be ex-forces to enjoy membership.

Weldon Branch British Legion the present branch started with a meeting on the 2nd March 2005 - 8 people were in attendance, including the County Field Administrator.
The villagers who attended are still full working members, they are Messrs M Dowling,
B Picton, J Rock, D Wallington. Sadly we have lost two members Ted Whitlam and
Dick Webster.

Today our membership stands at 28. And meet at the Cricket Club on the first Tuesday of every month. One month is the official meeting, the next month a social night.
Not all members are ex servicemen, so new members are always very welcome especially during the Poppy Appeal period.

The major fund raising activity for the charity is the 2 week Poppy Appeal period ending on the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday. We have 15 house to house poppy appeal collectors and 9 static collection boxes placed throughout the village. Other fund raising activities include quiz nights at the Village Hall and the more recent sell out Pudding Club afternoon, the Legion also have a stand at the Village Fete.

This year 2010/2011 was a record fund raising year with £2,648.12 being raised by the collections, donations and fund nights supported by our village community which is always very much appreciated.
